A Note on Audio Books
by VO Edit on January 14th, 2013

I've had many people asking about audio books lately. Here are some things I have noticed regarding this subject.

1. You have to understand that while audio books are good for the experience, you don't really get paid a lot for doing them.
2. The amount of effort it takes to record, edit, and finalize is not equal to what you are getting paid.
3. Make sure you understand the terms of the deal and be sure to confirm with your editor or consult with one, if you are unsure about the amount of time,  before you sign on the dotted line.
4. You should have someone else, or a team of someone elses, to be your second set of ears.   After hours upon hours of recording, the last thing you want to do is spend more hours of editing listening to your own voice.

The last is probably the most important to remember. This is because (simply put) after a while you get numb to your own voice, and factoring in fatigue, you are less likely to catch mistakes. I mean let's face it, editing to most folks is the worst part of any project, much less a project that you will be working on for weeks at a time LOL. A good editor should be able to work with you on the payment scale (I offer a per finished hour rate just for audio books).

Again, audio books are great for putting on resume and for getting experience with long-form narration. Just understand that it will be a very time-consuming project; but with good help and a focused mind, you can easily get through the process and have a completed audio book you can proud of.

For me, as one who is married to someone with Dyslexia, there is a satisfaction that comes along with a finished project as well. Just knowing that there is another book that is available for people with reading hindrances such as Dyslexia to enjoy makes me very happy.  For what good is any book if it can't be enjoyed?

If you have any questions or need more information, please feel free to comment, send email, or call.

Best of luck in your endeavors!
Chris
